Optical Engineering
(Subject Code: 080300)
Department Overview
This academic discipline originated from the optoelectronics research track within the former Department of Physical Electronics and Optoelectronics. Through interdisciplinary integration with fields such as physics and chemistry, the department was granted authority to confer Master's degrees in a first-level discipline by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 1998; in 2003, it was approved to confer Doctoral degrees in a first-level discipline; and in 2009, it was authorized to establish a postdoctoral research station under this first-level discipline. In September 2011, the first-level discipline of "Optical Engineering" was elevated to the status of a Key Discipline of Jiangsu Province.
This discipline encompasses the Advanced Photonics Center and the Display Technology Research Center of our college; it hosts the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center for Optical Communication Devices and Technologies and the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center for Information Display Engineering, and possesses internationally advanced scientific research and experimental platforms for optics, photonics, and optical display technologies. The discipline currently has 25 doctoral supervisors and 39 master's supervisors, forming a young and dynamic research team. The discipline has undertaken and completed hundreds of various projects, including national key research projects, the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and major national R&D initiatives, among others, and has received numerous scientific and technological awards. As an interdisciplinary field integrating photonics, physics, and chemistry, the discipline is currently conducting scientific research and technological R&D in areas such as advanced photonics materials, optical communication and integrated optics technology, biological optical detection and sensing, and optical display science and technology; furthermore, it has established extensive collaborative relationships with foreign universities and research institutions for scientific research and talent cultivation. A series of research achievements obtained by this discipline in recent years—characterized by independent intellectual property rights—have exerted significant influence both domestically and internationally, made substantial contributions to the economic development of the country and local regions, and enabled the cultivation of a large number of high-level scientific and technological professionals addressing major national needs.
Program Educational Objectives (approximately 150 words; the following content is for reference only):
To master the basic tenets of Marxism, adhere to the Four Cardinal Principles, love one's motherland, abide by laws and regulations, maintain upright conduct, and possess the spirit of serving the people and dedicating oneself to the cause of socialist construction.
Through this program, students are required to master fundamental optical theories and specialized knowledge of optoelectronic systems, and to develop the ability to engage in scientific research, technological development, teaching, or to independently undertake professional technical work; the program aims to enable students to gain a deep understanding of new technologies and development trends within this discipline both domestically and internationally, to conduct innovative research by addressing practical problems related to this field, to become proficient in a foreign language, and to emerge as high-level professionals in scientific research and technological R&D.
