The School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Southeast University traces its origin to the Department of Electronic Devices founded in November 1961, which was later renamed the Department of Electronic Engineering. It hosts one of China’s earliest established electronics-related disciplines. As a key discipline supported by the National "211 Project" and "985 Project", it is a pivotal school at Southeast University integrating teaching, scientific research and application development in the field of electronic science. The school has nurtured numerous scientists, educators and entrepreneurs, including Academicians Liu Shenggang, Wei Yu and Huang Ru.

The school boasts one of the earliest cohorts of electronics disciplines established in Chinese universities, covering two first-level disciplines: Electronic Science and Technology and Optical Engineering. The discipline of Electronic Science and Technology can be dated back to the Department of Electrical Engineering of National Southeast University in 1923 and its successor, the Department of Electrical Engineering of National Central University. In 2007, Electronic Science and Technology was accredited as one of China’s first national key first-level disciplines, also prioritized under the "211 Project" and "985 Project". It was selected into the national "Double First-Class" Initiative in 2017 and 2022, and ranked in the top tier in the 5th National Discipline Evaluation. According to the Report on Chinese Universities and Discipline Evaluation, the Electronic Science and Technology program of Southeast University has ranked No.1 nationwide for consecutive years. It secured 4th place in the 2023 U.S. News Global University Ranking for Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The school operates a series of research platforms at or above provincial and ministerial levels, including the National Key Laboratory of Digital Perception Chip Technology (co-constructed), National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Optical Sensing & Communication Integrated Network, National Technology Innovation Center for Advanced Display (Innovation Platform for Visual Health and Perception), Joint International Research Laboratory of Information Display and Visualization, Jiangsu Engineering Research Center for Display Technology, Jiangsu Engineering Technology Research Center for Information Display, Jiangsu Engineering Research Center for Optical Communication and Optical Sensing Chip Technology, Jiangsu Engineering Research Center for Optical Sensing and Optical Communication Network Technology, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Culture and Tourism for Advanced Display and Immersive Perception, Jiangsu University Key Laboratory of Flexible Integrated Devices and Intelligent Human-Machine Systems, Key Laboratory of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems of the Ministry of Education, and Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Submarine Communication and Sensing.

Leveraging these disciplinary platforms, three featured research directions have taken shape: Information Display, Optoelectronic Integration, and Intelligent Electronics. In the field of information display, the school jointly built the Shicheng Laboratory for Advanced Display and Visual Perception with the Technical Bureau of China Media Group, which plays an extremely important role in disciplinary development including scientific research, achievement transformation and talent cultivation.

In addition, the school runs the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Information and Electronics Majors, Jiangsu Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Internet of Things Engineering, Jiangsu Key Base for Industry-Education Integration of Integrated Circuits, and a dedicated innovation laboratory for undergraduate students. The school continuously undertakes a large number of national, provincial and ministerial research projects, such as National Major Science and Technology Projects, National Key R&D Programs, the former National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Basic Research Program (973 Program), and Frontier Research Programs of Jiangsu Province.

The school possesses a strong faculty for teaching and research. It currently has 120 staff members (including postdoctoral researchers and full-time research scientists), among whom 83 are full-time faculty, 43 are professors/research professors, 38 are associate professors/associate research professors, 54 are doctoral supervisors and 80 are master’s supervisors. 100% of full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 32 high-level talents such as recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Excellent Young Scholars. Many scholars hold important positions in international and national academic societies, expert panels and evaluation committees.

The school also engages world-renowned scholars as visiting and part-time professors, including Professor Albert Fert, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Member of the French Academy of Sciences; Professor Sumio Iijima, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Member of the Japan Academy and one of the founders of high-resolution electron microscopy; and Professor W. I. Milne, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and affiliated with the University of Cambridge.

The school enjoys robust research capacity, with 1 national-level and 8 provincial/ministerial-level research bases, plus 24 postgraduate workstations and practice bases. It has undertaken and completed numerous national, provincial and ministerial research projects covering National Key R&D Programs, National Major Special Projects and key defense research programs. In the past five years, the school has led the acquisition of 1 National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, 1 National Technical Invention Award, and more than 10 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. Its cumulative research funding has exceeded 500 million RMB. The school carries out industry-university-research cooperation with well-known domestic and foreign enterprises including Hua Hong Grace, Philips and OPPO, with technology transfer revenue surpassing 30 million RMB. Faculty and students have published over 1,000 SCI papers, nearly 500 of which are high-quality articles in Q1 and Q2 journals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences journal partitioning system.

The school attaches great importance to international development. Through multiple initiatives targeting top-tier universities, enterprises, experts and curricula, it strives to build world-class international teaching resources and cultivate students with global vision.

In scientific research, the school has established international research platforms jointly with world-leading universities and enterprises, such as the Joint International Research Laboratory of Information Display and Visualization (approved by the Ministry of Education), the Innovation Base for Display Science and Technology (the "111 Base" sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology), and the Southeast University-FEI Company Joint Laboratory, providing students with internationally aligned research and learning environments.

In talent training, long-term collaborations are maintained with world-class universities including the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Monash University, University of California, University of Rennes 1, Waseda University, Osaka University, University of Waterloo, ETH Zurich and Nanyang Technological University, as well as the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. These partnerships offer diverse opportunities for joint training, academic exchanges and seminars, including the "3+2" joint training program with the IPS Research Institute of Waseda University, Japan. Furthermore, partnerships with global enterprises such as ARM, Xilinx, Samsung, LG, TSMC and Thermo Fisher supply students with high-quality and diversified off-campus internship opportunities.

Graduates of the School of Electronic Science and Engineering are highly recognized by employers for their solid professional expertise, strong practical capabilities and comprehensive qualities, achieving an employment rate of nearly 100%. Graduates pursue careers in microelectronics, optoelectronics, integrated circuit design, chip design, communication engineering, information processing, computer networks, software and hardware development. Main employment sectors include high-tech enterprises, telecommunications, power, transportation, finance, aerospace, universities, government bodies and research institutes. In recent years, many outstanding graduates have joined state research institutions such as China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, as well as leading global enterprises including ZTE, Microsoft and IBM.

Over the past two years, on average 75% of undergraduate graduates pursue postgraduate studies at home and abroad.
